The Executive Director will report to the firm’s Board of Directors and work closely with an advisory board consisting of local attorneys committed to the firm’s success. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and building the firm and for managing the firm once it is operational.

The ASU Alumni Law Group:
The ASU Alumni Law Group is a nonprofit, fee-for-service law firm, modeled in part on teaching hospitals. This first-in-the-nation venture will help bridge the gap between law school and practice by hiring and training recent ASU law graduates in the practical aspects of lawyering and preparing them to succeed in the 21st Century legal market. The firm will partner with other ASU initiatives focused on improving Arizona’s economy and quality of life and will provide low-cost, high-quality legal services to a wide variety of clients, including those who cannot afford to pay market rates. The law firm will be self-sufficient after an initial start-up phase and, to the extent it generates excess revenues, will fund student scholarships at the College of Law.

Duties/Responsibilities:

- Developing and implementing the firm’s strategic plan. Working closely with the Board of Directors and an advisory board of local attorneys, the Executive Director will
- Determine the specific practice areas and client groups on which the firm will focus;
- Create a plan for generating legal work for the firm’s lawyers
- Design a formal training program for the firm’s associates;
- Coordinate with the State Bar and other local organizations, such as Community Legal Services

- Building the firm. The Executive Director will
- Establish firm procedures and policies;
- Identify and negotiate for appropriate fringe benefits
- Hire supervising attorneys for each practice area, an office manager and support staff
- Locate and negotiate for temporary space for the firm, to be used until the law school’s new building is complete
- Identify and acquire appropriate assets necessary for running the firm, including books, technology, furniture, etc.
- Establish policies and procedures to ensure that the firm not act in ways contrary to ASU’s or the State’s interests

- Managing the firm. The Executive Director will
- Prepare and manage the firm’s budget;
- Ensure compliance with the firm’s policies and procedures
- Oversee the firm’s lawyers to ensure compliance with all laws and applicable ethical rules
- Coordinate with the College of Law to identify and solicit applications from third year students
- Make hiring and firing decisions regarding all firm employees
- Represent the firm in the local legal community and nationally
- Develop contacts within the legal community to help generate work for the firm’s lawyers and help associates find employment upon leaving the firm

- Fundraising. Although the firm will be self-sufficient after the start-up phase, the Executive Director will
- Identify and apply for grants to support the firm’s activities
- Identify and meet with individuals or organizations that might be interested in supporting the firm
